One of Football Lodge South West’s most distinctive founding details began with a tradition at its Mother Lodge.

A tradition reimagined

Football Lodge No. 9921 used gavels modelled on football boots from the era before the Second World War. Football Lodge South West wanted to continue that idea while giving it a modern identity of its own.

A conversation between the founding Master and Keith Vallance led to a new design. Keith created and donated a set of wooden gavels based on a modern Adidas Predator football boot. They made their debut at the Consecration on 4 June 2025.

Dark and light wood

The set uses dark and light wood. The Wardens’ gavels alternate the two woods between handle and head, while the Master’s gavel is made entirely from dark wood. The Junior Warden’s handle has one patterned section, the Senior Warden’s has two and the Master’s has three, representing the steps towards the Throne of King Solomon.

Boot and ball together

Each gavel rests on a bespoke green plinth. The block is patterned as a modern football, so every use brings the boot and ball together.

The result is both practical and symbolic: a familiar Lodge object reshaped through football. It connects Football Lodge South West with the tradition of its Mother Lodge while giving No. 10063 a feature created specifically for its own beginning.
